Four steps to know if you have been saved in Christ

Today we want to look at how to know whether you are truly saved and what are the noticeable changes you can observe to be sure of your salvation.

A lot of believers do not know if they are truly saved. When you ask them: are you going to heaven with Christ? Some of the responses are usually very shocking and ridiculous. They probably would say: I do not know, only God can decide that. What a lie! This group of people does not fully understand the scripture.

You should not think of entering into the Kingdom of God upon the basis of a “MAYBE I AM SAVED”, “I GUESS SO” or “I THINK SO”. You have to know so.

God loves you so much that He has offered you the gift of salvation and that you might have life in abundance (John 10:10).  Below are the four things you should study in your personal life to be sure of your salvation.

1. Change in your attitude towards the things of God.

The first step to know or find out if you are truly saved is to look at your life after conversion into the new life of Christ. Have you been changed in the following ways?

i. Change towards sin: That means, you hate sin and avoid scenarios that cause you to commit sinful acts. Romans 6:23 says; for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Making daily effort to abstain from sinful actions by relying on the help of the Holy Spirit and giving yourself to the Word of God. As King David said, in my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11). It means that David gave himself to study the Word and meditate on it so that he would not go astray.

ii. Change towards God: You reverence God in your daily life and get him involved in your decision making process. Proverbs 3:6 says; seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. That means before you make important decisions in your life you enquire God’s mind towards your decisions. It could be a decision about business, relationship or new ventures.

iii. Change towards yourself: This means that you see yourself the way God sees you and you are constantly developing your character and mind to be as that of Jesus Christ. Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:1-2) and Col 3:16. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. How rich is the Word of Christ in your life? And are you making the necessary adjustment in your life through the Word in order to conform to the image and person of God. If yes, then you are saved.

2. The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God.

This is where the Holy Spirit keeps reminding you and affirms that you are a child of God and that there are certain things others can do, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do them. (Romans 8:16.The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children).

For example, those who do not know God can tell a lie, steal, be dishonest, cheat and get drunk without having the feelings of guilt or conviction, but for you as a child of God the Holy Spirit will convict you and educate you that you are a child of God. Thus, you should discontinue living your life like that. In as much as that voice of the Holy Spirit is still being heard in your heart and bearing witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. Then you are saved.

3.  Hunger or passionate for the things of God.

In spite of your daily struggles, you still desire to pursue righteousness and godliness. Despite the desire to sin, being dishonest and do evil, you choose to do good. Matthew 5:6.Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. It tells us here; in as much as you still hunger and thirst for God righteousness you will be filled.

Hence, you can evaluate your salvation by looking at your level of hunger for God. Are you still hungry and thirsty for godliness and righteousness? This can be measured by the level of your commitment towards fellowship with God through prayer, bible study and the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Have you totally lost interest in bible study, fellowship with one another or even stopped attending a local church? Then you might want to re-evaluate your level of hunger for God.

David said, “I was glad when they say let us go into the house of the lord” (Psalm 122:1). This is a man who constantly and consistently desired God’s presence in his life. If that yearning and thirsting is still burning in your heart, then you are saved.

4. Fruit bearing, John 15:16

Do you bring forth good fruit that will remain? Is there fruit in your life and the lives of others because of your service to God? Jesus said “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven” (Matt 5:16). Are you shining as that light? Do others glorify God because of the life you live? Most importantly, can the fruits of the Holy Spirit be noticed in your life: Love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control (Gal 5:22-23). If your answers are yes, then you are truly saved!

Do not live your life on the basis of “MAYBE I AM SAVED”, “I GUESS SO” or “I THINK SO’. You have to KNOW that you are saved! Examine yourself and take the appropriate action to be truly saved.

God bless you richly.
